Apple is using a secret facility in California to design and manufacture prototype MicroLED screens, according to a report from Bloomberg. Engineers are said to have produced fully functional Apple Watch-sized MicroLED screens at the facility, with a view to using the technology commercially for the first time in the watch. The Apple Watch currently uses OLED screens from LG Display.
MicroLED is a complex new emissive display technology where, like OLED, each pixel gives off its own light instead of relying on backlighting for the entire panel. This can give MicroLED excellent contrast, power efficiency, and viewing angles without OLED's [...]
When you get a new car, and you're feeling like a star, the first thing you're probably going to do is ghost ride it. This is where the Owl camera can come in.
I've been testing Owl, an always-on, two-way camera that records everything that's happening inside and outside of your car all day, every day for the last couple of weeks.
The Owl camera is designed to monitor your car for break-ins, collisions and police stops. Owl can also be used to capture fun moments (see above) on the road or beautiful scenery, simply by saying, ‘Ok, presto.'
If Owl senses [...]
If you sleep on your Apple Watch the wrong way, you might get a wake-up call from the police. That's what happened to Jason Rowley, who tweeted about the incident earlier this week. Using his watch as a sleep tracker, he ended up holding down the crown button to trigger an emergency call to the police, who showed up in his bedroom at 1AM. Rowley told us the police were friendly and helpful, and accustomed to WatchOS misdials like this one.
Public service announcement: If you sleep with an Apple Watch on, consider turning off the Emergency SOS feature, or you [...]
If you blink during Apple's latest iPhone ad, you might miss a weird little animation bug. It's right at the end of a slickly produced commercial, where the text from an iMessage escapes the animated bubble it's supposed to stay inside. It's a minor issue and easy to brush off, but the fact it's captured in such a high profile ad just further highlights Apple's many bugs in iOS 11.
9to5Mac writer Benjamin Mayo spotted the bug in Apple's latest ad, and he's clearly surprised “that this was signed off for the commercial,” especially as he highlighted it months ago and [...]
Watch out all you well-paid, fat-and-sassy jazz marimba players: Shimon, the marimba playing robot, is after your jobs. Shimon is the brainchild of the Robotic Musicianship Group at Georgia Tech and I've been following his career for a few years now. In this video, taken at the Ferst Center Presents as part of Atlanta Science Festival, Shimon and a band led by Zachary Robert Kondak jam out to Kondak's latest rock opera. That's Richard Savery on the sax.
Watch it. It's wild.
The truly amazing part of the show has to be drummer Jason Barnes' mechanical arm that he uses to play [...]
Anker is a device maker that's rapidly become a go-to brand for affordable, quality accessories include cables, chargers and backup batteries. More recently, it's started to branch out into additional areas, including projectors through its Nebula brand. The Nebula Capsule is the latest product from that line, a super portable projector with an Android-based OS, a built-in battery and the ability to double as a Bluetooth speaker.
The Nebula Capsule is the smaller sibling to the Nebula Mars portable cinema projector, which is actually far less portable than the newer Capsule. The Mars is more of a home theater projector [...]
